My Question for General Petraeus,

If I was on one of those legislative panels interviewing the general, this is what I would ask him...

"General, before asking my questions, I want to lay out some matters which I consider to be quite factual.

"As you know, some years ago a highly respected former general officer, in fact a former head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who had become Secretary of State under the Bush administration, stood before the world at the United Nations and assured us that a large number of matters that were not only not true, but had been intentionally fudged, were stated to be in fact true, and not to be doubted. With a great deal of seriousness we were lied to by a man with impeccable credentials as a military man of honor.

"It is also a fact that can be observed in Washington, by anyone not entirely asleep, that general officers in the military frequently become quite political. By this I mean that although they represent to all and everyone that they are just giving objective military points of view, the fact is that they are quite skilled at the Washington dance of intentional spin. Spin, by the way, is in reality a quite conscious hardly ever true sales pitch. It pretends it is just an opinion, but in reality is intended to assert itself as being true, and in fact its main purpose is to convince others that it is a correct point of view, even though the speaker knows it is mostly a kind of typical stretching of facts.

"In addition to the above, it is also a well known fact that hidden behind the scenes of all this posturing and men of honor dramatic play acting, the reality is that there exist completely unjustifiable relationships between our military and the huge and profitable industries that benefit economically from war.

"Now others here on this panel have spent a lot of hot air being nice to you, for the most part because as skilled politicians they don't want to seem to be unkind of anyone in our military, since they know that the next day the press will be all over it as if somehow to demand the highest truthfulness from our general officers is to abuse those who are out there dying. Of course, general officers don't die in these wars, just the children of the American People, and in particular the most vulnerable because of their race and their poverty.

"Having said the above, what I want for you to do now, is not to answer me when I am done speaking, but to face those cameras over there and speak to the American People and explain why anyone who is a professional military man and friendly with the high and mighty in Washington, should be believed. Please tell those families whose sons and daughters are dying under your orders and your leadership that you actually do know what you are doing and this demand for their sacrifice actually means something anyone anymore should believe or care about.

"And while you are doing this, don't run out all these smoke and mirrors as if all these details you can display, that makes it appear that you know what you are talking about, actually means the American People should trust your judgment. You see this is all very simple, in spite of all the words that confuse and hide the truth. The fact is that you work for the People, the administration works for the People, and the People clearly from the last election and the most recent polls want you to get the hell out of Iraq. So tell them why you think you don't have to pay any attention to those people for whom you work."
