WHY?
Why Celebration and Theater and Art and Rite?
Well, what do you think a protest rally or march truly is?
If we trace back the Ideal element in the Civil Rights Movement,
we get from Martin Luther King, to Gandhi, and thence to our very own
transendental social artist Henery David Thoreau and his essay on Civil Disobediance.
"But, to speak
practically
and as a citizen, unlike those who call themselves no-government men, I
ask
for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. Let
every
man make known what kind of government would command his respect, and
that
will be one step toward obtaining it."
"Must the citizen ever
for
a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the
legislator?"
"Action
from
principle—the perception and the performance of right —changes things
and
relations; it is essentially revolutionary, and does not consist wholly
with
anything which was. It not only divides states and churches, it divides
families;
ay, it divides the individual, separating the diabolical in him from
the divine."
"They only can
force
me who obey a higher law than I."
"There will never be a
really
free and enlightened State until the State comes to recognize the
individual
as a higher and independent power, from which all its own power and
authority
are derived, and treats him accordingly."
hmmmmm...okay,
but there's tragedy and comedy, right?
